Disable Windows start up items and speed up your PC

If your PC takes a long time to boot up it could be because there are a lot of different programs trying to boot up, this prevents the system from doing anything else which results in the slower boot time. There are a few simple steps you can introduce to speed up the boot time of your PC and get rid of long loading times.

The steps vary slightly depending on which version of windows you are using, make sure you read the correct steps for the version you are running.

Windows XP / Windows Vista / Windows 7

  1. Press the windows key and 'r' together, this will open a small dialog box
  2. Type 'msconfig' into this box and press enter
  3. Alternatively if using Windows 7 you can press the start orb and then type 'msconfig' into the search box
  4. This should then open a new window, at the top there should be a tab labeled 'Startup', clicking this tab will show all of the programs which are set to startup when the system first boots
  5. Untick any programs which you do not want to startup when your system boots
  6. Save your changes and restart your system

Windows 8 / Windows 8.1 / Windows 10

 

  1. Open task manager by right clicking the Windows icon on the bottom left and clicking 'Task manager'
  2. Alternatively, you can press Control + Alt + Escape to open the same window
  3. Once task manager is open you should see a 'Start-up' tab, click this tab
  4. This will show a list of the programs currently set to start at boot, right click a program and click 'Disable' to prevent that program from starting automatically
  5. Save your changes and restart your system
